How to write a good thesis

If you are seeking to earn an academic degree you may be required to write a thesis. This is an argument, idea or theory that is thoroughly studied and presented in written form. This can be a challenging and overwhelming assignment for students not familiar with the structure. The idea is to provide proof or evidence that will support the main idea. You give logic reasoning for your research and present your findings using a specific format. The following points will help you develop a thesis for your topic.

  • Review guidelines and instructions for your thesis. You may be required to follow a certain formatting style, word count, and include certain pages with your paper.
  • If a title page is required information such as your school name, instructor name, date, title of thesis and author name may appear. You may be required to space and type the content according to formatting style and instructions.
  • Your abstract may follow the title page. This is summary that presents the purpose behind the research paper. This may be one or two paragraphs in length. Some students write this section last after they have completed their research.
  • If required a table of contents page would appear next. This lists all pages included in the research paper including the appendices. Subheadings may be included and indented where needed. List tables and figures with page numbers as well.
  • Develop your introduction which includes your thesis statement and theory behind your work. You may have paragraphs to follow that cite work and sources used.
  • The methods and results section may follow the introduction. This is where you mention what you used to come up with your findings. You will mention procedures, materials, and procedures. The results section details any experiments or tests you completed to reach your result.
  • Your conclusion should restate your thesis while summarizing main points behind your research. You may have a discussion section or discuss your methods and conclusions here.
  • Provide recommendations based on your findings. You may be required to have an acknowledgment section to recognize people who helped you and have a reference section to note works used during research. The appendices may also appear toward the end.
  • Proofread, edit and revise your content. Have someone read over your work to help you catch errors and clarify sentences. Make sure sources are properly cited.
